3-Methylmethcathinone (also known as 3-MMC or metaphedrone) is a novel psychoactive substance of the cathinone class. It was first synthesised in 1929, but was not widely studied until the 1990s.
3-MMC first appeared on the online research chemical market shortly after the banning of the massively popular mephedrone.
Whats mephedrone? It's 4-MMC. Remember the whole 'Meow Meow' media panic in the early 2000s? Thats mephedrone. In 2010, it was the UK's fourth favorite substance after weed, MDMA, and cocaine.
3-MMC is structurally similar to mephedrone, and produces similar effects. It's since become a popular recreational drug due to its stimulating and euphoric effects, and has been sold online as a "designer drug" since 2010.
The popularity really ramped up during the lockdown, as an after effect of a media moral panic, as reported by Vice.
3-MMC is typically sold as a white or off-white powder, which is either snorted, smoked, swallowed or for the really committed, used rectally.
What does 3-MMC feel like?
3-MMC has heavier amphetamine-like stimulant properties compared to mephedrone, but they have very similar chemical structures—they increase synaptic concentrations of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin, and so can also be very “more-ish,” encouraging binge-and-crash patterns.
Many people report that 3-MMC gives them a sense of euphoria and well-being. Some say it makes them feel more confident and sociable, while others find that it helps them to focus and concentrate.
It has been reported to produce feelings of euphoria, stimulation, improved mood and decreased anxiety. It has also been associated with increased alertness, improved focus and increased motivation. .
Some people also report experiencing mild visual and auditory hallucinations.
The effects of 3-MMC of course vary depending on the dose, the person's individual physiology, and other factors.
However, most people report feeling happy, relaxed, and energized when taking 3-MMC.

"feeling generally stimulated, mildly euphoric, somewhat empathogenic, very content and clear-headed. I feel quite excellent all around. This one reminds me a bit of Ethcathinone. It is more gentle and sweet than 4-MMC, but also less inebriating and euphoric. It might be better suited to intimate evenings at home rather than parties, for which I would typically choose 4-MMC."
"It was a coming up like MDMA; not the effect but the way I feel the coming up. So I was sitting there, everyone around me, and suddenly felt totally amazing. I was looking around with a little disbelieve that the effects where so strong. The effects where a mix of the clear feeling of cocaine, the energy of speed, and the warm fulfilling excitement of MDMA. This sounds probably like the best drug ever, but the effect were split, so in someway they are cancelling each other a little bit out. Not THE fulfillment of MDMA because of the feeling like Cocaine. So I am not getting the special mystical empathy of MDMA. In the other direction, the clear feeling and the energy are influenced by the MDMA-like calmness and the cuddle feeling."
How long does 3-MMC last?
The effects of 3-MMC typically last for 3-4 hours. Obviously this is dependant on the quantity taken.
What are the potential risks for 3-MMC?
At higher doses, 3-MMC has been reported to produce feelings of paranoia, anxiety and panic.
The experience reports on Erowid are certainly not universally positive:
"150mg held in mouth then swallowed 8am, alert in 10 mins then about 60 minutes of jittery and unpleasant stimulation followed by digestive issues, cramping and intermittent nausea, a pretty strong headache and an unpleasant spaced out feeling leading into the next day. Slept that night pretty normally though."

3-MMC is a schedule I controlled substance in the United States, and is classified as a Class A drug in the United Kingdom. It is illegal to possess, sell or supply 3-MMC in both countries.
In the Netherlands it can still be bought legally.
